Rome – the heart of Roman empire and capital of modern Italy


rom1Rome  is the capital of Italy and the Lazio region. Situated on the rivers Tiber and Aniene. City was the capital of the Roman Empire, the most powerful, largest and most long-lived empire in the classical Western civilization. Vatican, situated in Rome, a sovereign country, the seat of the Roman Catholic Church and Pope.

Rome is the largest city in Italy and one of the largest cities in Europe with an area of 1 285 sq. km. Its suburbs reach the Tyrrhenian Sea. Within the city the population was around 2.5 million inhabitants, nearly 3.8 million live in the region of Rome.

With its gross domestic product of € 97 billion (in 2005) Rome gives 6.7 percent of Italian GDP, which is the largest of all Italian cities.

The town exists of 2 800 years and was a center of ancient Rome, later the Papal area Italiaskoto Kingdom and the Italian Republic (modern Italy). Rome is known as “la Città Eterna” (Eternal City), “l ‘Urbe” (Latin for Great city) or “city of seven hills.

Since 1956, Rome is only twinned with Paris [3], and Paris is only twinned with Rome – “Only Paris is worthy of Rome, only Rome is worthy of Paris” reads part of the text of the agreement
